A General Glimpse, About Al Tamye Theatre Company
  • Al-Tamye Theatre Company is an Egyptian independent theatre group, based in Cairo since it was established in 2002.
  • The company is managed and directed by Salam Yousry, and consists of more than 15 performers, musicians and technicians. Al-Tamye usually combines poetry, live music, storytelling, painting and video-art in its performances.
  • In April 2009, Al-Tamye produced its 7th production The Checkpoint Fantasy. The performance was a documentary written by the performers themselves in a fun and playful way. They told stories about their own lives and their experiences in Cairo, the city where they live. Since then, Al-Tamye has been working on more personal story telling performances with live music.
  • The Checkpoint Fantasy emanated from a belief that any simple story has an exceptional significance, and that everybody has something different and interesting to say. Hence, Al-Tamye members as activists tried to share their own stories and experiences with other members of their society. Moreover, Al-Tamye is an amalgamation of both, non-professional as well as professional performers. Some of the Al Tamye's members participated in the foundation of The Cairo Complaints Choir of Egypt, in May of 2010. The Choir project relies solely on the participation of non-professional singers and performers and was artistically directed by Al-Tamye's founder, Salam Yousry. The Choir was the conclusion of a workshop that transformed personal complaints of its participants into playful and humorous songs that were performed on stage.
  • Al-Tamye functions as a community that is based on the exchange of ideas amongst its members. Everyone is an active participant in discussions, management, as well as in the decision making process.
